How can I find out if my car seat is installed correctly?

By Mary Sharman, edHelperBaby

Question
How can I find out if my car seat is installed correctly?

It is a very good thing to be concerned about this considering that research shows that 85% of car seats are not installed correctly. According to recent studies, one of the most common problems is a car seat that does not fit snuggly in the vehicle. It should not be able to move back and forth or side to side more than one inch in any direction. Other common mistakes include harnesses that are too loose or are twisted, chest clips that ride too low (they should be at the level with the child's armpit) and forward facing car seats. Your baby should ride rear facing in the back seat until he is one year old and weighs twenty pounds. Most cars produced since 2002 include the LATCH system which enables you to attach the seat to metal hooks mounted on the seat frame.

If your car does not have the LATCH system and you need help you can contact your local Highway Safety Administration and find out where you can have your car seat inspected. Most states have technicians that will fix your seat and show you what you may have done incorrectly and how to fix it.
