What can I do to help my toddler feel a part of the new baby being in out home?

Question
What can I do to help my toddler feel a part of the new baby being in our

       home?

Bringing home a new baby is very stressful. If you add a toddler to the mix it can feel impossible. If your child is acting unruly and is having a hard time with all the attention your belly is getting, get him involved. There are lots of ways to allow your little one to participate in the preparation for a new addition.

After your shower when all of the new items have had their tags removed let your little one help wash the clothes. I let my daughter load the washing machine with all of her brother's clothes and blankets as I buy or receive them. She is so proud of herself and I make sure she knows that the items are for her little brother.

My husband has started a sweet tradition with our daughter that really makes her feel special. When they are shopping he always lets her pick a new rattle or small toy for baby brother. She is so proud when they return and she takes it to his room and displays it in a prominent location.

I have told my daughter from the start that she will be a very important helper when the baby comes and we always list the things that she will help mommy and daddy with. A visual display would also be a very good idea. Creating a chart of things that the older sibling could be responsible is a great way to let feel involved.

Another visual tool that will bring closeness is marking a calendar and counting down the days as a family until baby arrives. Colorful poster board and your child's favorite stickers (in our case ANYTHING princess) can be used to create a beautiful and memorable display. Your young one will feel a part of the whole process and it will bring the family together to celebrate each day that passes bringing you closer to the BIG DAY!

Another activity that you can include your little in is packing for the hospital. Allow them to choose your pajamas and maybe even what the baby will wear home from the hospital. During this time you can talk to them about whom they may be staying with while you are giving birth and how long you will be gone. When the day arrives they will not be shocked when mom and dad are gone. This will help him or her not to be afraid.

The birth of a second child is a beautiful and amazing gift and having a special little one to share it with will make it all the more enjoyable. Take time with your child and use tools to help them understand what is happening. They need to know that everything will be alright and soon there will be another person in their life to love!
