Activity - Buying The Basic Elements For Your Maternity Wardrobe

Buying The Basic Elements For Your Maternity Wardrobe
It can be very difficult when you are pregnant to fathom spending a lot of money on a maternity wardrobe that you will likely only need to wear for a few months of your pregnancy.  At the same time, it can also be very difficult to feel good about yourself when you no longer fit into your pre-pregnancy clothes.  Choosing the appropriate elements to create a practical and cost-effective maternity wardrobe will be an important task while you are pregnant.

Consider purchasing the following basic maternity wear, to comfortably (for you as well as your wallet) get you through your pregnancy and the many body changes that come with it:
  • Classic white t-shirt
  • Button-down shirt
  • V-neck blouse
  • Versatile cardigan
  • Bra (without underwire)
  • Black and/or brown stretch pants or leggings
  • Elastic-waist comfy pants
  • Black dress
  • Skirt
  • Slip-on shoes
  • Jeans (optional)
  • Bathing suit and cover-up (optional)

  My Own Experience
First of all, I have found that when buying your maternity clothes, you should only buy a few items at a time.  I make this first suggestion because usually most women do not buy as many maternity clothes as they would have in their regular pre-pregnancy wardrobe.  Therefore, by purchasing a few items at a time throughout your pregnancy, you can revive your wardrobe at various intervals instead of leaving yourself bored with the selections you made early on.

Additionally, there are a couple specific clothes hints I have discovered.  For example, if you choose to buy a maternity skirt, I recommend a slim-fitting style.  Initially, I bought a full style skirt that I had spotted on clearance; however, I noticed that it ended up making me look larger than I already am, a look I am not going for during pregnancy!  (And what is even worse, I bought it on clearance and therefore, couldn't return it!)  I have also found with the elastic-waist pants that at the beginning of my third trimester, they became uncomfortable to wear across my belly.  At this point, I have opted to wear the elastic band below my belly.

Also, about mid-way through my first pregnancy, I had to go to an event with my husband and spent a little more on a nicely fitting black dress.  I would recommend purchasing one even if you do not have an upcoming event scheduled.  I always feel quite comfortable in this dress, and it is nice to have a piece in my maternity wardrobe that I look forward to putting on. (I have also found that having this dress has made getting through such events, which include wearing uncomfortable heels for a late night, much easier!)

Finally, I suggest that you try everything on prior to purchasing it or make yourself aware of the store's return policy; items and styles that fit you pre-pregnancy may not be as flattering now that your body has changed.  Keep in mind, some stores do not allow you to return items after a certain period of time or at all if they are marked down for the season.
