Activity - Choosing A Bra For Pregnancy and Nursing

Choosing A Bra For Pregnancy and Nursing
One of the first body changes many pregnant women notice about themselves is that their breasts are tender and have likely grown in size.  Additionally, some women notice their nipples tend to become erect more easily and as pregnancy progresses, the nipples may even leak small amounts of a fluid called colostrum.  Pregnancy hormones are the cause for all of these symptoms, and while you cannot stop these changes, you can treat yourself to at least one bra that will help minimize any discomfort you may be feeling.

While your breasts will continually change in various ways throughout your pregnancy, they will likely grow in size the most significantly during your first trimester.  Therefore, it is advisable to wait until you have entered your second trimester to purchase a new bra.  However, if you feel you are uncomfortable now and cannot wait, a good rule of thumb is to purchase a bra that is a size larger than your pre-pregnancy bra size.  This should give you enough room to once again feel comfortable.  If you can wait until the second trimester, you may want to consider going to a store that has assistants who can properly measure and advise you on the most appropriate bra size.  Often, specialty shops will be able to order specific pregnancy bra styles that larger department stores may not offer.

Additionally, if you are looking to save money, you may want to purchase a nursing bra to wear throughout pregnancy instead.  Once more, the best advice is to visit a shop that has assistants available who can properly measure you and offer suggestions on appropriate nursing bras that will fit you best.

  Things To Consider Beforehand
Below are a few tips to help you purchase a comfortable bra for your pregnancy:
  • Choose a supportive bra that also has some stretch to it.  This will become especially important if you are purchasing a nursing bra, as breast size can change considerably within a day, depending on how recently your baby has nursed.
  • Ditch the underwire!  Instead, choose a bra that has a wide supportive band underneath the cups.  Again, this is important if you plan to nurse, as underwire can interfere with milk production and in severe cases can contribute to clogged milk ducts.
  • Bras with wide shoulder straps will support the cups of the bra better than smaller ones.
  • Adjustable back-fastening bras offer greater comfort throughout your entire pregnancy as they can adjust to your changing body shape, whereas a front-fastening bra does not offer as much flexibility.
  • If breasts seem uncomfortable at night, wear a sports bra to reduce soreness.  Women who have increased considerably in breast size often find wearing extra support at night helps reduce tenderness during the day.
