Activity - Choosing A Pediatrician For Your Baby

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

Choosing A Pediatrician For Your Baby
It is recommended that you begin looking for a pediatrician around the 20th week of your pregnancy.  For many parents, finding a doctor they are comfortable with and want to be a part of their baby's life can be a difficult task.  Therefore, it is important to start the search early so you can be confident in the pediatrician you have chosen by the time your baby arrives.

The best way to find a pediatrician that will provide the care you are seeking for your baby is to interview several before you make a final decision.  During each interview you should ask a set of questions you have prepared ahead of time (see next section: Possible Interviewing Questions) so you can later go back and evaluate each pediatrician's answers.  You will then be able to compare their answers to how you and your partner would like the questions answered to arrive at your best possible match.

  Possible Interviewing Questions
Consider asking any of the following when preparing your pediatrician interviewing questions.

Questions to ask yourself about the office:
  • Is the office part of your insurance network?
  • Is the office convenient to your home?
  • Is the office convenient to your daycare?
  • Is the office convenient to your work?

       Questions to ask the pediatrician:
  • How many pediatricians are part of the office?
  • What hospital(s) are they affiliated with?
  • What are regular office hours?
  • Are there additional office hours for illness or emergencies?
  • Are there separate waiting areas for sick appointments versus regular checkup appointments?
  • How far in advance do regular checkup appointments need to be made?
  • What are the pediatrician's qualifications?
  • What are the pediatrician's thoughts about breastfeeding versus bottle-feeding?
  • What are the pediatrician's thoughts about circumcision?
  • When will the pediatrician come to the hospital to check the baby after he/she is born?
