All the Faces

By Melanie Fleury, edHelperBaby

Milestones
Right around 3 to 6 months, your baby is starting to recognize faces, especially those of the people he loves! He is also starting to recognize different facial expressions and gestures. A smiling face will get him giggling and wiggling. He will react differently to his favorite faces than he does to faces he does not know.

Activity
You and your baby can have great fun looking at different faces. You can make a photo album filled with all the faces of those he loves. You and baby can look through the photos with you identifying all the people. He will enjoy looking at the people in his life and you will also be reinforcing names of those he knows.  You can also cut out magazine pictures and create a photo album of random people with different expressions. As he looks at the magazine pictures, you can label their expressions or talk about other things going in the magazine picture. Baby will soon start to pick favorite pictures. Maybe the picture of the baby running gets him smiling every time. He may love the picture of the little boy petting the dog. He will also let you know what he doesn't like.

Tips and Hints

  • Make sure that you laminate the pictures you use. This keeps them protected from baby's drool and messy hands.
  • Switch out pictures every once in a while to keep baby guessing.
  • Pictures are easy to keep up with if you keep them in an album or punch a hole and put them on a key ring.
