"Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?"

By Melanie Fleury, edHelperBaby

Bring A Book to Life
This is a great age to add a favorite book to your child's daily routine. You might pick the time before lunch. A classic favorite for 2-year-olds is "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You  See?" By Eric Carle. You can make this book come to life with a very simple craft activity.

What To Do
You can use this book to do a 2-week activity. Week 1 consists of reading the book to your toddler daily. Pick a consistent time, perhaps before naptime. You will notice that by the end of the week you and your toddler will have the book memorized. Before week 2 starts purchase felt in various colors. Black for the black sheep, white for the white dog and so on. Cut out the different animal shapes. Also get one sheet of felt for the animals to stick on. Then you can recite the book for your child and let them stick the felt animals onto the felt boards. Your toddler will love that you are using a book they love, but will also enjoy that the book is presented in new way.

What It Does for Your Toddler
This activity has is a great way to spend quality time with your toddler. It also helps foster her love of reading. Also, by repeating the book over and over, it helps with her memorization and vocabulary skills. Maneuvering the felt pieces onto the felt board helps with motor skills. This particular book also is great for teaching colors.

Some Variations
You can also print out pictures of the animals for your child to color the appropriate color. Then put the pages together to make a small book.  One variation that my toddler enjoyed was adding a picture of herself to the end of the book and adding it to the storyline.  Enjoy the time spent with your toddler enjoying great literature.
