Creating a baby registry

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

  Creating a baby registry
There are many advantages to creating a baby registry; most importantly it informs your family and friends what it is you actually need for your new baby.  Additionally, once the registry is created, the work is taken out of your hands, as when items are purchased the information is automatically updated and can be shipped directly to you without the purchaser needing to find your current address.  Creating a registry can actually be a lot of fun for both you and your partner, whether you choose the option of making one at the store of your choice or at home using your own computer.  So why not create one today - you never know what you might end up with!

  What to consider beforehand
There are a few guidelines you may want to keep in mind when creating your baby registry:
  • When selecting a store, you may want to choose a national store that has several locations throughout the country.  This will make it easier for those purchasing items from your registry as some people do not feel comfortable shopping strictly online and prefer seeing the items prior to purchasing them.
  • When selecting a store, you may want to choose a store that is located near you.  This allows you the advantage of seeing and testing out items prior to adding them to your registry and will make returning any duplicate items simple for you.
  • When selecting a store, you may find that not every store has what it is that you want.  Many women find it easier to register at a couple stores to end up with exactly what they need.
  • Depending on your preference, you can choose to register online or at the store directly. By registering online you have the advantage of moving at your own pace and adding items as you think of them.  However, when you register at the store, there will be a store associate there to quickly answer any of your questions about products or the registering process.  You may want to choose a store that will allow you the option of beginning the registering process in person and then adding items as necessary online.
  • Remember to double-check that your current address information is correct, as that address will be used to ship items directly to you if the purchaser chooses.  (Or if you move during your pregnancy, remember to update your address information!)
  • Communicate to your family any stores you have registered at, as they will help to spread the word without you having to involve yourself with it, causing you to feel like you are asking for gifts from others.

Remember this is a great activity that you and your partner can take part in together.  It should be one of the least stressful parts of your pregnancy and will add to the excitement both of you already share!
