Daddy on Duty: What Can Dad Do While At the Hospital

By Mary Sharman, edHelperBaby

Activity
What can Daddy do while you are working hard to bring that sweet baby into the world? EVERYTHING!! There are so many little things that Dad can stay on top of during your stay at the hospital.

Call or send the first text to announce baby :

Daddy should have the list of folks to call and he can do this as soon as the excitement has died down in the delivery room. When the baby is being bathed and you cannot hold him/her and you are getting your first drink after delivery Dad can be on the phone.

Keep tabs on how you are doing :

Dad can talk with the nurses and ask all the questions you both have. He can keep up with information such as when the nurse is supposed to come back with meds and how much you are to take. Sometimes, when there is a shift change the new nurse on duty might get confused. Dad can help keep you comfortable by communicating with the nurse and doctor.

Talk to the pediatrician about the baby:

Dad can ask about all the shots and blood work that is being done in the nursery. He can make sure that he gets all the paperwork and reads all the information concerning when the doctor wants to see the baby again.

       Picture Guru:

Make a list of the shots you want taken and hand that duty over to your hubby. He can be responsible for emailing the precious pics after everyone is gone and you are resting.

       Relative Wrangler:

When enough is enough, Dad can tell everyone to get lost so that you and the little one can get some rest. He can also be in charge of giving people a suitable time to visit once you get home from the hospital.

When the time has come to leave, dad, can make sure that all is packed and that everyone makes it to the car safely. You will be in a wheel chair and will more than likely be holding the car seat in your lap so you will need his arms to carry all of the over flow.

Giving daddy some duties will allow you to relax and focus on the rest you so desperately need while in the hospital. It will also give daddy a chance to feel a part of the process.
