           When you become pregnant, a dream is beginning to come true for you. Having the right doctor is critical at this time because you will have so many questions and maybe problems and you will need the best care you can get! Use the questions below to guide you as you interview a potential obstetrician.       

       Remember:

       Most doctors limit consultations to 15 minutes, so ask your most important first and save the questions about insurance and fees for the office manger.       

       Basic Questions
  • How long have you been practicing?
  • How much time do you allow for prenatal visits?
  • How long is the average wait in your office?
  • How do you handle routine phone calls in between visits?
  • If it is a solo practice then who delivers if you are unavailable?
  • How can I reach you in an emergency?

    • Prenatal Care Questions
      • What prenatal tests do you routinely recommend?
      • What if I have a concern about a specific test?
      • If my pregnancy should become high-risk, what changes can I expect?
             

             Labor and Delivery Questions
      • What kind of childbirth class do you recommend?
      • Will you help me develop a birth plan?
      • Will you only deliver me if you are on call?
      • Will you still check on me even if you are not on call?
      • Who will be in charge of my care in the delivery room?
             

             Postpartum
      • Will I be separated from my baby after the birth?
      • When can I hold the baby after giving birth?
      • When will I see you after I give birth?
      • How often will I see you before I go home?
             

              Questions to Ask Yourself
      • Did you feel comfortable?
      • How long were you kept waiting?
      • Did the doctor make you feel rushed?
      • How helpful were the nurses and support staff at the office?
