Diaper Duty: 5 tips for a successful change

By Mary Sharman, edHelperBaby

Activity
According to simple math you will probably change your baby's diaper 5,000 times before she graduates to the potty. That is A LOT! Here are five little tips to help make the diaper changing experience a good one!

  • Fold down the front of the baby's diaper to protect the healing cord stump. They sell special diapers with the cut out around the cord area to help. It is worth the little extra money to make sure that the cord is cared for properly.
  • Use a cloth diaper or a "Pee Pee Tee Pee" to cover your little boy‘s penis so that you don't get sprayed with the tiny sprinkler.
  • Squeeze diaper cream on the diaper. This will help keep your hands free to hold those tiny legs up. You can also squeeze the antibiotic ointment on your son's penis instead of spreading it around with your finger. Just squeeze a generous amount on the circumcised area and close the diaper.
  • Once you have fastened the diaper run your finger along the edges to make sure all the side are untucked to prevent leaks.
  • Entertain your baby. Hang a mobile or sing to him/her so that he/she will remain content while you are cleaning him/her up.

Hopefully your experiences changing your baby will be a fun bonding time for you both.
