Just Keep Swimming, Swimming, Swimming

By Melanie Fleury, edHelperBaby

Activity
During the hot summer months nothing feels better to baby than a dip in cool water. Most babies love the water and love to splash. You can make this time even more fun and beneficial for your baby. Encourage baby to kick and splash by praising his efforts. You can also sing a little song that you make up. Here's an example:

Sung to the tune of "Row Row Row Your Boat"

Kick, Kick , Kick the water Splash it all around

Splashy Splashy Splashy Splashy Water on ground

Remember, your song writing capabilities don't have to be great, or even good!! Baby will enjoy listening to you anyway!

What It Does
Playing in the water is a favorite for most babies. It is very important because it helps strengthen the leg and abdominal muscles, which will be needed later for crawling. It also helps baby become more comfortable in the water, a great help when it is time to learn to swim.

Try It Out
My 5-month-old enjoys his time in the water immensely. By placing him in the pool with his belly in the water and the rest of him out, he is in position to swim. He kicks his feet and splashes with his hands, perfect technique for learning freestyle. He especially loves the cool water on a hot day, but will just as easily swim in the tub in lukewarm water.
