Learning by Feeling

By Melanie Fleury, edHelperBaby

Activity
3-month-olds are learning at a very fast pace. They learn directly through their senses. At three months your baby is starting to learn about grasping things with his hands and learning about things by touching them. A fun way to help him experience different textures is to make a texture box. Take several items with different textures. Some ideas are: sandpaper, a ball with little bumps, a cotton ball, and/or paper. Make sure that they are not too small as this could be a choking hazard. Put the items in a shoe box or plastic container and introduce them to baby one at a time. Anything you find with an interesting texture, you can add to the box. Baby starts to learn about touch and about different things in the world around him.

Switch it Up
My 3-month-old is already showing his preference for certain textures. The cotton ball is by far his favorite. As the baby gets older, you can switch out objects. When baby starts talking, you can have her pull out an item with her eyes closed and try to guess what it is. There are many ways to make this activity grow with your child. Again, I caution you, please be careful with the size of the item so that you do not create a choking hazard.  Baby will have so much fun learning how to feel and touch the different textures.
