Make Something for the Baby

Make Something for the Baby
Preparing for the arrival of a new baby can be a very exciting but hectic time. You want to make sure that you have everything in place for when he or she arrives. Set some time aside to make something special for your baby. You'll be surprised how much more meaningful the item will be. It's okay if you are not a crafty, creative, or artistic person - your baby will not mind! The possibilities of items to create are endless- make a blanket, create a nameplate, knit a hat or booties, make a mobile, create a baby book, paint murals on the nursery walls, sew the crib bedding, etc... This item will be something that your child will cherish for a lifetime.

My Experience
When I was pregnant with my first child, my mom suggested that I make something for the baby. Make something for the baby? I did not think I had the abilities to do something like that! It was a thought that I pushed to the back of my mind. One day while visiting at my parents' house, my mom took out a multi-colored knitted baby blanket. It was one that she had knitted for me when she was pregnant with me. I did remember seeing it in pictures of myself when I was little. My mom told me it was my favorite blanket, and I never left home without it.

After that touching moment, I was in search of something that I could create for my children. I discovered that even someone with no sewing abilities could make a no-sew fleece blanket. I picked up a pattern and some material from a local craft store. One day nearing the end of my pregnancy, I spent an afternoon making this blanket. I was so proud of what I had accomplished! Ever since her first day home, my 16-month-old daughter has loved it.

Just last week, I dug out the old pattern and picked up some material to make a blanket for my upcoming child. This time around, my husband and I made the blanket together. What a memorable experience it was! I just know that the new baby will love it as much as my first child loved hers.

I look forward to the day when they are older when I can explain to them that these blankets were made out of love by their parents.
