Make a Splash in the Kitchen!!

By Melanie Fleury, edHelperBaby

Milestones at this age
18-24 month olds are working on so many milestones ! Among one of  the most important are all the motor skills milestones they will be reaching. They will learn to walk then run, stack 2 blocks then make a tower, hold a ball and then throw it! As they are becoming more independent, they are also becoming more emotional and learning how to deal with those emotions. They may start having separation anxiety. They may seem to always need you to be within their vision if not completely engaged with them.

Activity idea
This activity takes care of working with your child's motor skills as well as allowing him or her to be near you while you are still able to get dinner on the stove.

Take a towel and place it on the kitchen floor with your child. Fill some empty pots with water and give your toddler a couple of different size cups. Allow them to pour water from pot to pot while you stay in the kitchen making a meal. Note: Don't forget to NEVER EVER leave your child alone with water! The pouring of the water allows your child to work on his or her coordination and also allows for exploration of differences in volume. Since you are in the room with him or her it also prevents your child from wanting mommy while she is cooking.

How it worked
We did this at home with my 21-month-old. It was great fun ! However, a little bit of tweaking was required!

       - Make sure that there is enough water in the pot so that the pot is too heavy to tip over, otherwise, the pot goes upside down and game is over. (Unless you want to keep refilling the pot every 2 min.)

       - Be careful! Stray water had me slipping a few times! Had to put the house slippers on!

       - My 6-year-old suggested using our magic towels, those towels that are about the size of a deck of cards then open to a full sized towel. That was a little extra treat to make the activity different.

       - Make sure you demonstrate what you want your toddler to do. Mine just sat there splashing until I showed her that I wanted pouring.

This activity was great way to keep my child  occupied and happy while I made supper. I felt it also truly engaged her motor skills and volume recognition.
