Making a Memory: How to make the birthing experience one to remember.

Making a Memory: How to make the birthing experience one to remember.

When the alarm clock sounded on the day that I was to be induced I was already in the shower. I could hardly wait to bring my baby girl into this world. These are emotions that most mothers experience and want to share with those around them. Creating an environment of peace and joy on the big day can make everyone involved feel excited and relaxed as the new member of the family arrives.

A good idea is to create an environment that will soothe you as soon as you arrive in the labor and delivery room. Chances are you will be there for a while so the setting should relax you while waiting. I am pregnant for the second time and I have chosen to bring a small docking station for my iPod to place near the head of the bed or in the window sill. I loaded it with all my favorite inspirational or quiet music to soothe and relax me and my husband. Sounds of the ocean or rainfall could also be sounds that would soothe rising anxiety.

While you are waiting you could be recording video messages for your new little bundle to let them know how excited you are that they are coming. Talk about how you are feeling and what you are expecting in the minutes and hours to come. I promise you, when they are older, they will cherish watching you go through this experience. Remember to tell your hubby to stop during a contraction or while you are yelling that you are dying.

You can also take this time and bond with your belly. Have your husband or significant other read a special book that you choose just for this event. With our daughter we read the book God Gave Us You by: Lisa Tawn Bergren. It is a book that our little girl still requests be read to her. This is a great time for the daddy to rub the tummy and help mom relax before all the action begins.

Daddies sometimes feel that they are useless and often pace the floor during the time that you are waiting. Put Daddy's hands to work giving you a massage. Your lower back will more than likely be throbbing and a set of familiar hands will soothe the pain and your emotions. This is a time to connect with your spouse and nonverbally share all of the feelings about what is going to happen.

Because the day could drag on and on you could also play short and simple games. Word games would be fun. Something that would distract you without being too cumbersome or involved are a great choice. My husband and I played charades and he imitated how the mothers would react when seeing our daughter. I laughed and the nurse laughed as well. It was a great moment! Laughing, I have found is a great way to ease stress and find a "happy place" before all the discomfort comes.

Enjoy your time, make the best of it. By the end of the day you will forget about all the pain and feel nothing but joy and excitement. Holding that precious gift is the end result so celebrate the moments leading up to the birth.
