Preparing for the First Week Home with your Baby

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

Preparing for the First Week Home with your Baby
There are several things you and your partner can do now, prior to the arrival of your baby that will help you cope with everyday tasks you'll be faced with once you return home from the hospital.  Listed below is a compilation of things you may want to consider doing now (or over the next few weeks!):
  • Attend a childbirth class - many hospitals offer classes for both new parents and parents who need a "refresher" course.
  • Pack a bag for the hospital - don't forget comfortable pajamas, socks, slippers/flip-flops, nursing bra/tops, underwear, toiletries/cosmetics, and clothes for both you and your baby to go home in.
  • Prepare and freeze meals - or, if possible, look into a service that will cook and deliver meals to your door during this first week.
  • Install the car seat in your car.
  • Prepare any other children in the household for your newest family addition.
  • Arrange "stand-by" childcare of any older children for when you go into labor.
  • Arrange "stand-by" pet care for when you go into labor - think of neighbors or friends who love to walk and play with your four-legged friends as much as you do.  Your pets will be going through enough adjustment to a crying infant; they deserve someone who will give them dedicated attention as well.
  • Arrange for a "date night" - you may not have the chance again for some time so take advantage now while you still can!
  • Stock up on diapers and wipes - if you are using disposable diapers, you may want to have both newborn and size 1 diapers available depending on the size of your baby.
  • Stock up on formula and bottles - if you have decided to formula-feed your baby or use it to supplement your breast milk, ensure you have enough to get you through the first week or so.  Having to go out in the middle of the night on a sleep-deprived formula search won't be safe for you or any other driver on the road!
