Preparing the Perfect Nursery

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

  Preparing the Perfect Nursery
Preparing your nursery can be a lot of fun as long as you don't get too overwhelmed by the preparation of it.  Take some time early in your third trimester (if you haven't started the process sooner!) to consider the following items for your nursery:
  • Bassinet
  • Crib
  • Changing table (Consider a contoured changing pad which makes it harder for a baby roll off.)
  • Dresser
  • Rocking chair/Glider/Recliner
  • Waste basket/Diaper pail
  • Nursing/bottle feeding pillow
  • Breast pump
  • Nursery lamp
  • Baby monitor
  • Mobile
  • Baby carrier/Sling
  • Swing
  • Bouncy seat
  • Portable travel crib
  • Baby bathtub
  • Closet hangers

Overall, this is just a general list of suggested items you will want to consider as part of your nursery.  There may be several other items you would like to add (or will be given!) that would compliment any nursery perfectly.

  My Five Nursery Essentials
Having prepared a nursery twice now, for me there were only a few essentials that I would not have wanted to live without:
  • Crib - We were big crib fans over the bassinet after 6 weeks - we all slept better!
  • Changing table - This helped to save my and my husband's backs as we didn't have to bend over as far if we changed the baby on our bed.
  • Recliner - Forget the rocking chair or glider; for me I figured if I was going to be sleeping half the time while the baby nursed, I might as well be comfortable!
  • Breast pump - If for nothing else than giving me the opportunity to step away for a couple hours of quiet time...
  • Humidifier - For us it wasn't just for colds -we used it to create white noise to help drown out the other sounds of the house.

Yes, I do have several other items that are nice to have (swing, bouncy seat) but at the end of the day, I know I could live without them as it does not seem like I use them as regularly.

  What to Consider Beforehand
There are a few guidelines you may want to keep in mind when creating the perfect nursery:
  • If you plan to use a theme for your nursery decide on this first so that everything else can be planned around it.
  • Think about how you will adjust the temperature of the room - if it is winter, make sure enough heat enters the room or if it is summer, consider a ceiling fan/standing fan to help cool the room.
  • If you plan to paint/wallpaper the nursery, this should be one of the first tasks to complete.
  • If necessary, clean the carpets prior to placing furniture in the room. Have your partner rent a shampooer or have it professionally cleaned.
  • Place furniture in the room prior to hanging anything on the walls. This allows you to fill in space more efficiently and helps to eliminate "accidental" holes!
  • Think over what you will use to cover the windows - blinds, shades, shutters, or curtains. Some parents like to use "blackout" curtains in nurseries to minimize extra light and simulate a darker environment.
