Preparing the Route to the Hospital/Birthing Center

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

Preparing the Route to the Hospital
One task you should not leave out when preparing for your delivery is mapping out a route to the hospital/birthing center.  Although it may seem simple, it is often a forgotten step that could leave you calling for directions in between contractions!   Map out the most direct route with your partner and consider making a trial run before your expected due date.

  Things to Consider Beforehand
Now that you have mapped out your route to the hospital/birthing center with your partner, take the time to think about varying traffic conditions.  Here are few questions to ask:
  • Have we chosen the best route based on traveling during peak traffic hours?
  • Will day or night construction impede our travel depending on when we leave?
  • Are there any special road closures due to upcoming holiday festivities?

Based on the answers you come up with, you may want to plan out an alternate route as well.  Sitting in a traffic jam while you are experiencing contractions will not be pleasant for either you or your partner.

  Last Minute Details
Another good idea is to have at least a half a tank of gas in your car at all times.  This way the amount of gas in your tank can be the last thing on your mind when it comes down to taking this drive!

Additionally, make sure you have contacted the hospital/birthing center ahead of time to find out where you should park, where you should report to (maternity ward, emergency room, floor number), and what to do if you arrive after hours.
