Tummy Time

By Melanie Fleury, edHelperBaby

Milestones
From the time your baby is born, he is working on gaining more and more neck control. Around 6-8 weeks, he should be able to move his head from side to side while lying on his tummy. Around 4 months, baby should be able to hold head up at a 45 degree angle while lying on his tummy. This is also about the age that baby can hold his head up in a car seat or a stroller. This is a good time to introduce your baby to the jogging stroller, just be careful to stick to smooth rides. Having proper head control is important for crawling, walking, and even feeding. There are several activities that you can do to encourage baby.

Activities
At around 3 months, your baby should definitely be having time on his belly. While sleeping on his back is still the best for sleeping, when awake try to put baby on his belly. He will work hard at getting that neck up. You can place a toy next to him so that he can try to scoot or roll to it.

Another great activity is to lay baby down on his back. Grab both arms and gently pull him into a sitting position. The baby should be able to hold his head aligned with his body. Let him sit up for a few minutes then gently return him to laying down

Babies at this age group also love to look around. Change his view by propping him up with pillows or moving him around the room. Moving the head around to look at things is another exercise for the neck. Remember to never leave him alone! He could scoot or roll off the pillows or bed.

       Have fun!
