Baby Your Hands: Give yourself a great manicure at home

Baby Your Hands: Give yourself a great manicure at home

Give yourself a break, Mom, with an at-home manicure. Sit back, relax and paint your worries away.

       Shape

Remove any leftover polish. A no mess way to do this is the soft sponge tubes that are soaked with remover. Cutex makes a great brand called the Twister. You simply insert your finger and twist it around to get all the polish off. It is great for those of us who are really prone to spills! You should file your nails, but don't saw back and forth because that can break your nails.

       Soak

Fill a small bowl with warm soapy water and a few drops of skin softening essential oil like rose or lavender. Relax and soak hands for a few minutes.

       Clean

Rub a cuticle softener into your nails and push them back with a wash cloth. Finish by cleaning under your nails then trim excess skin and hangnails with manicure scissors.

       Scrub

       Whip up a fresh scrub:

       1/3 cup raw sugar

       Several squirts of lime juice

       1tsp. to 1Tbs olive oil

Combine ingredients in a small bowl and mash with a spoon. Add more olive oil if the consistency is too rough and more sugar if it is too watery. Massage into hands. Nuke a wet towel in the microwave and wipe hands when finished.

       Massage

Use your favorite hand lotion and massage into hands. Make sure you wipe off your nails because the polish will not go on very well if you still have lotion on them.

       Polish

Apply a clear base coat and then two thin layers of color. After you have applied the color apply a top coat. If you are preggers choose toxin free polishes like ruby red shades of Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer. If you make mistakes while painting use a nail corrector pen.
