Can I Ride a Roller Coaster when I am Pregnant?

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

Can I Ride a Roller Coaster when I am Pregnant?
While there is no documented research that suggests riding a roller coaster is detrimental to an unborn baby, the American Pregnancy Association recommends refraining from this activity while you are pregnant.  Due to the abrupt starts and stops that usually accompany these types of rides, a placental abruption is possible.  Placental abruption is a serious pregnancy complication where the placenta peels away from the inner wall of the uterus earlier than expected, causing heavy bleeding.  Without immediate attention, the blood loss may lead to premature birth.  Doctors suggest thinking of the uterine trauma that can be caused by a roller coaster as similar to that of a car accident.

Additionally, experts warn that this same advice should be heeded for pregnant mothers considering any other amusement park ride that will cause sudden movements to the uterus, such as bumper cars.  Without research to suggest these rides do not cause jarring forces inside the uterus, most doctors and experts recommend waiting until after you have had your baby to enjoy these adventurous rides again.

If you will be attending an amusement park while you are pregnant, check with your prenatal care doctor on her own recommendations and pay attention to the posted health-risk signs at the park.
