If you are having acrylic nails put on, you probably are not exposed to enough of any hazardous materials to create any significant hazard to your pregnancy. Some of the chemicals involved can be absorbed through the skin, but you're not likely to be exposed to great enough amounts to pose a danger other than a possible allergen reaction and skin rash. Fumes are not likely to harm you if you are merely visiting the shop as a customer. If you are applying the nails all day then your risk is much greater, but even then the most likely problem is allergic reactions, which do not force cosmetologists to leave the industry. Some studies do show a rise in miscarriages among cosmetologists but several others do not show this. When getting your nails done the biggest concern is hygiene and how clean the tools are. Make sure that your nail technician is trained and always cleans his/her tools after each use. This is the largest problem for most nail salons because replacing certain items after each use is expensive, so they use the same nail file or other items all day. This mix of bacteria from lots of people can cause a serious fungal infection and that is the last thing you need while pregnant.
