How much caffeine should I consume if I am pregnant?

By Mary Sharman, edHelperBaby

Question
How much caffeine should I consume if I am pregnant?

This is of great interest to me because I am addicted to Dr. Pepper. After speaking with my doctor he recommended not more than 150 mg a day. That is about the equivalent of one twenty ounce bottle. He also recommended following it up with lots of water to flush it as caffeine does travel across the placenta and excessive amounts can be harmful to the baby. If you enjoy coffee you should cut it to one 8 ounce cup as it contains between 120 -180 mg of caffeine. Try switching to decaf for the time being and enjoy other beverages. Tea could be a better option as it only contain between 30 and 48 mg for one 8 ounce cup.  Watch out for over consumption of chocolate as well. Dark chocolate contains more caffeine than milk chocolate and a regular size bar contains 31 mgs of caffeine. Keep all of these things in mind when you are looking to ease a craving and you will not have any trouble.
