Is it OK to Lie on My Back when I am Pregnant?

By Rachel Lacourciere, edHelperBaby

Is it OK to Lie on My Back when I am Pregnant?
Sleeping on your back should not pose a problem if you are in your first trimester experiencing a healthy pregnancy without complications.  However, many obstetricians agree that during your second and especially your third trimester, sleeping on your back may not be the most beneficial to your unborn baby.  This is because when you lie flat on your back, the weight of your growing uterus begins to put extra weight on a major vein in your back (called the inferior vena cava) that is responsible for returning blood from your legs to your heart.  This can result in low blood pressure, light-headedness, or possibly reduced blood flow to your uterus.

What is the Best Position to Sleep in when I am Pregnant?
Many obstetricians and health experts suggest the following position for optimizing blood flow for both yourself and your baby:  lie on your left side with a pillow placed between your legs to help support your hip and make the position more comfortable.

What if I Continue to Move to a Back Position While I am Asleep?
Overall, this should not be a concern for most women, as your body will wake you up to remind you to change positions if lying on your back is beginning to cause concern for you or your baby.   The key is to be comfortable when you go to sleep while at the same time remembering to change positions if you should awaken at night.
