By Mary Sharman, edHelperBaby

Questions
Typically, after giving birth a new mother will go through a phase that is called the "baby blues." It usually lasts a couple of weeks and occurs during the same time each day. It is a release of hormones, a reaction to the changes in routine, and loss of sleep. If the mom experiences the symptoms listed below then she should contact her OB/Gyn or regular doctor immediately.
  • Fever over 101F
  • Crying that lasts for days
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Thoughts of harming the baby
  • Your depression interferes significantly with your ability to care for your baby or carry out normal everyday functions
  • Intense fatigue or sleeplessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness
  • Lack of motivation or loss of interest in yourself or your family
