What is cord blood banking?

By Mary Sharman, edHelperBaby

Question
           What is cord blood banking?

Cord blood banking is a process in which the blood from the umbilical cord is preserved for future uses if your child should become ill and need it. It is used to treat certain illnesses such as leukemia and sickle cell anemia. It can also be donated to help other family members or non family members that are a match. The cost is the only thing that most people debate and that is because it can be pricey if you use a private service to store the blood. There is usually an initial fee of over $1000 dollars and an annual fee of around $300 or so.
