Why Am I So Forgetful When I Am Pregnant? |
A question asked by many pregnant women is why they are so forgetful during pregnancy. Even the most organized new mother will get frustrated at times as she may lose her train of thought while speaking or find she has misplaced yet something else without any recollection of where she last put it. Conflicting studies have found that pregnant women do show a level of memory loss--especially during their third trimester--while others have found pregnant women score as well on memory tests as women who are not pregnant. So if temporary memory loss is a valid symptom of pregnancy, what causes it? The most convincing evidence points to hormonal changes. As hormones are thrown off balance at various points in pregnancy, loss of focus and forgetfulness can result. Many experts also believe that distraction is a likely culprit for causing absentmindedness (also referred to as mommy brain and pregnancy amnesia) during pregnancy. Pregnant women often concentrate on their own health and what is best for their growing babies, while envisioning what their new lives will be like. All of this can add up to losing focus on routine tasks and regular daily activities, causing what some theorize is similar to temporary memory loss. |
What Strategies Can I Use To Control My Forgetfulness? |
Unfortunately, for many women, forgetfulness will occur throughout their pregnancies. However, a few simple strategies can be used to help minimize the extra work and frustration that comes along with it.

Can Forgetfulness Become A Problem I Need To Notify My Doctor About? |
While forgetfulness is common and not normally considered a serious medical concern, if you feel uncomfortable with how distracted you have become you should speak to your regular prenatal care doctor. Additionally, if you are feeling overwhelmed and concerned that you can not keep up with daily activities, you should contact your doctor as it can be an early sign of depression. |
